Pay-to-play fire departments!

This from Daily Kos -- please follow link to original

Houses should be small enough to drown in a bathtub, if necessary

Hot new concept: Pay-to-play fire departments!

The conservative vision was on full display last week in Obion County, Tennessee. In this rural section of Tennessee, Gene Cranick’s home caught on fire. As the Cranicks fled their home, their neighbors alerted the county’s firefighters, who soon arrived at the scene. Yet when the firefighters arrived, they refused to put out the fire, saying that the family failed to pay the annual subscription fee to the fire department. Because the county’s fire services for rural residences is based on household subscription fees, the firefighters, fully equipped to help the Cranicks, stood by and watched as the home burned to the ground.

Interesting, no? I'd love to know whether the Cranicks are Teabagger sympathizers, just for full background.

If their house had been -- as Grover Norquist once counseled regarding governments -- small enough to drown in a bathtub, then they could have put the fire out themselves. See? (h/t to socratic for that one)

But the fascinating part of this story for me is that the firefighters ended up having to put the fire out on the property of a neighbor who had paid the fee. That's actually why we have taxes and common payment for essential services like fire fighting. Yes, the Cranicks saved on tax-like fee payments, and yes, they suffered the consequences of doing so. But their neighbor paid for protection, and suffered fire damage anyway. And not because of random accident, but because the firefighters were forced to refuse to come to the Cranicks' assistance. If they had, the neighbor would have had no damage at all.

It's also why we do things like treat even undocumented immigrants in hospital emergency rooms. No, they haven't paid. But yes, you stand a much better chance of not getting their tuberculosis when you hire them on the cheap, pretending not to notice their immigration status.

I guess I'm also surprised that the fire department wasn't prepared to accept payment for services. If the issue really is limited resources, then surely they'd be interested in recouping the sunk costs of having responded to the scene. The Cranicks offered to pay whatever it took to put the fire out. Why not do so, and then charge as doctors or hospitals might for uninsured patients? Apparently Republican Utopia is filled not with Libertarians, but with moral scolds. Who knew? We all thought it was the opposite! The fiscal conservatives of Obion County, Tennessee threw out the money they spent sending the trucks out, and turned their backs on a profit-making opportunity in exchange for the chance to stick in in the Cranicks' eye. Why, you can practically taste the fiscal responsibility and good ol' fashioned common sense that made America great (but the Confederacy presumably greater)!

Meanwhile, I'm sure the neighbor is wondering right now whether he can get his fee prorated.

The silver lining here is that local water utilities now have a new and untapped revenue source. They can begin squeezing fire departments every time they want to open a hydrant.

Be on the lookout next summer for pay-to-play fire departments dropping lit matches around town to drum up business. And remember, if one of their fires melts your Medicaid-paid mobility scooter, you can still get another free one in time for the next Teabagger rally

All the pretty bank failures

By the way -- just a little aside: At this point last year, the FDIC had closed “only” 100 banks. We are on pace to exceed last year’s record setting bank closures by 30%. (in case anyone wondered). We seem to be a couple of years away from another 1930's-like "Great Depression".

The hatred of "modernity", the "hands off" deregulation of business, the bursting of a huge bubble -- very similar to events prior to 1929.

Good luck to all you folks out there. There are times I'm really happy to be old.

Add to the above mix a number of political fools that hate anything that is not exactly like them -- most Republicans, and most of the "Tea-Party" folks. Hoo-boy, what a mix!!

(don't forget the cowardly Democrats)

More abour bullying

Do not forget -- it's not just gay and lesbian kids that are bullied. Any kid who can be seen as "different", any kid who becomes the target of some "popular kid", any kid who is seen as "too smart", "too dumb", too any-damn-thing can be, and usually is, a target.

Please face the facts -- the USA doesn't give a damn about kids. We pay lip service. We say, "it's for the kids" (especially right wing "christians") -- but, it's NOT "for the kids". Children are just a prop for a lot of folks -- they use the IDEA of children, the appearance of a "family" to burnish their own image, their "public persona". If they could use blow up dolls of kids that they could fold and put in a dresser drawer after trotting them out, they would be much happier.

How to Kill a Kid

How to Kill a Kid
Rob Tisinai
October 4th, 2010

Step 1: Denial

Maggie Gallagher covers her ass on Tyler Clementi’s suicide:

I do not think the absence of gay marriage is the cause of these tragedies or its presence will resolve them. We can make this a symbol of all our other fights, or we can try to save all our kids, gay and straight, from this kind of ugly and mindless cruelty. My heart goes out to the family of the young man. God bless him and them.

Step 2: Degradation

World Net Daily columnist Vox Day:

[Tyler Clementi] killed himself because he could not live with the shame of knowing that everyone would be aware of his submission to what he apparently believed to be evil desires. While giving in to our desire for evil is something that we all do from time to time, it is also true that some desires happen to be more shameful or humiliating than others. For example, a man’s desire for his neighbor’s wife is sinful, but few consider it to be as appalling as his desire for his neighbor’s child.

Step 3: Damnation

An account of Senator Jim DeMint speaking at a Spartanburg church rally:

DeMint said if someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn’t be teaching in the classroom and he holds the same position on an unmarried woman who’s sleeping with her boyfriend — she shouldn’t be in the classroom.

Step 4: Repeat

Here’s what the right-wing Christianist (not Christian) message boils down to:

It’s not our fault that gay kids are killing themselves. They kill themselves because they feel naturally ashamed of their perversion. Also, they’re vile creatures who shouldn’t be around kids.

How angry are you? How much angrier can you get? Double that. Then get angrier.

Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for president of the U.S....in 1872
Efforts to build a National Women’s History Museum in Washington, DC, are on hold for now, as Republican U.S. Senators Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Jim DeMint of South Carolina have used parliamentary tactics to delay passage of legislation creating the museum.

The reasons cited by Coburn and DeMint range from financial concerns to giving too much weight to the abortion rights movement. DeMint reportedly received a letter from the conservative Concerned Women for America which claimed the new museum would “focus on abortion rights without featuring any of the many contributions of the pro-life movement in America.” Supporters of the museum rejected that argument. Museum CEO Joan Wages told USA Today, “We are not going to do an exhibit on that issue because we have to raise $400 million. We cannot afford, literally, to focus on issues that are divisive.”

As for the financial concerns, supporters of the museum held a $350-plate fundraiser last week that featured actress Meryl Streep, who pledged to donate $1 million. Former Abbott Laboratories CEO Duane Burnham has promised to match Streep’s contribution.

French -- third day of protest against "pension reform"

2 October 2010 Last updated at 13:52 ET

French hold a third day of protest against pension reform

French hold fresh pension protest

Hundreds of thousands of people across France have taken to the streets to demonstrate against President Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to raise the retirement age, according to police figures.

More than 200 protests were planned throughout the country.

It is the third day of demonstrations against the proposed reforms, which go before parliament on Tuesday, in the last month.

The government wants the retirement age to rise from 60 to 62.

President Sarkozy says this is essential if the French pension system is to be viable in the long term.

His opponents say society's poorest people will be hit hardest by the changes.

Trade unions in France are proclaiming a success their day of mobilisation against planned reforms of the pension system, says the BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris.

They say nearly three million people - about the same as the previous protest on 23 September - turned out in demonstrations across the country.

The first protest over pensions was on 6 September.

However the interior ministry, using police estimates, says turnout was down, at less than one million on Saturday.

These were the first demonstrations to take place on a non-working day, a change reflected in the make-up of the crowds, with many women and families taking part for the first time, our correspondent says.

The pension reform bill, which has already been passed by France's lower house of parliament, will be debated from 5 October by the upper house, the Senate, where it is expected to pass comfortably.
Controversial proposals
Private and public sector workers demonstrate over pension reforms in Marseille Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in a third day of protests

French workers can expect to spend more of their life in retirement than those in any other country, according to figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Under current rules, both men and women in France can retire at 60, provided they have paid social security contributions for 40.5 years - although they are not entitled to a full pension until they are 65.

The government says it will save 70bn euros (£58bn) by raising the retirement age to 62 by 2018, the qualification to 41.5 years, and the pension age to 67.

Unions and opposition politicians say the plan puts an unfair burden on workers, particularly women, part-timers and the former unemployed who may struggle to hit the 41.5 year requirement.

They have made counter-proposals, including calls for taxes on certain bonuses and on the highest incomes to help fund the pension system.

Today Europe -- tomorrow ???

Massive Strikes Against Spending Cuts Rock Europe
In total, 14 European countries have protests and strikes planned.

Trade union workers launched a massive strike throughout Europe on Wednesday in a protest against budget cuts. Marches took place in Brussels, Greece, Italy and Spain, among other countries, with additional protests planned for the near future. John Monks, general secretary of the European Trades Union Confederation (ETUC), organized the strikes as a day of action against austerity measures, stating, "This is a crucial day for Europe."

Imposing large budget cuts, Monks said, is an extreme measure that endangers the recovering economy. "There is an alternative [to austerity]. And the alternative is not to pay back all the debts in the large amounts so quickly, but over a longer period. Keep growth in the economy. Order new schools from the private sector. Invest in green technologies. Invest in Europe's industries. Some extra help for young people. We're a rich part of the world. We don't have to rush to eliminate all the red ink tomorrow."

Many governments in Europe have implemented punishment fines on 27 member states that increase the debt to pay for welfare and job programs. Greece received a federal bailout earlier this year, but unemployment remains at its highest level in the past ten years, even as welfare continues to be slashed.

The cuts affect the building of new schools, roads and hospitals. Workers across the spectrum walked out on their jobs today, from doctors to bus drivers.

Like the US, Europe's financial crisis is perhaps the worst it has seen since the 1930s. CNN reports that Ireland and Greece face credit downgrades as a result of their bailouts, which has increased the cost of borrowing. As their governments struggle to support their public, they are forced to run up the European deficit - which, in turn, is punished through the austerity cuts, preventing economic growth as services and jobs programs continue to be slashed.

Spain faces similar turmoil. The socialist government received a bailout under the condition of implementing pay freezes and making unpopular cuts to public programs. According to Julia Kollewe of the Guardian, if Spain's credit is downgraded, the result could be several years of economic struggle for the country to recover from a property market collapse. Unemployment in Spain is the highest in the 27-member "euro zone" at 20 percent.

Workers in the UK joined demonstrators in Brussels as well. Trades Union Congress (TUC) General Secretary Brendan Barber echoed Monks' message to union workers, stating, "All across Europe, governments have become obsessed with immediate deficit reduction and are embarking on cuts programs of such magnitude that the fragile recovery of the continent's economies is threatened. Union aren't asking governments to ignore the deficit, just to discard the timetable that demands deficit reduction now and instead concentrate on boosting growth and jobs."

some decent news

ONLY two banks failed today. That counts as good news.

Wall Street is doing well while Main Street is still in the doldrums.

I guess the banks run by "The Masters Of The Universe" are almost immune to failure (bailouts anyone?) while all the smaller local banks we actually depend on still live in a "capitalist society". It seems "state socialism" only goes so far.

How much fraud can people handle before they get angry -- and direct it in the right direction?

We will discover -- sooner or later.

Shoreline Bank, Shoreline, Washington, was closed today by the Washington Department of Financial Institutions, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect the depositors, the FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with GBC International Bank, Los Angeles, California, to assume all of the deposits of Shoreline Bank.

The three branches of Shoreline Bank will reopen during their normal business hours beginning Saturday as branches of GBC International Bank. Depositors of Shoreline Bank will automatically become depositors of GBC International Bank. Deposits will continue to be insured by the FDIC, so there is no need for customers to change their banking relationship in order to retain their deposit insurance coverage. Customers of Shoreline Bank should continue to use their existing branch until they receive notice from GBC International Bank that it has completed systems changes to allow other GBC International Bank branches to process their accounts as well.

This evening and over the weekend, depositors of Shoreline Bank can access their money by writing checks or using ATM or debit cards. Checks drawn on the bank will continue to be processed. Loan customers should continue to make their payments as usual.

As of June 30, 2010, Shoreline Bank had approximately $104.2 million in total assets and $100.2 million in total deposits. GBC International Bank will pay the FDIC a premium of 0.25 percent to assume all of the deposits of Shoreline Bank. In addition to assuming all of the deposits of the failed bank, GBC International Bank agreed to purchase approximately $65.7 million of the failed bank's assets. The FDIC will retain the balance of the assets for later disposition.

The FDIC and GBC International Bank entered into a loss-share transaction on $49.2 million of Shoreline Bank's assets. GBC International Bank will share in the losses on the asset pools covered under the loss-share agreement. The loss-share transaction is projected to maximize returns on the assets covered by keeping them in the private sector. The transaction also is expected to minimize disruptions for loan customers. For more information on loss share, please visit: http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/failed/lossshare/index.html.

Customers who have questions about today's transaction can call the FDIC toll-free at 1-800-613-0378. The phone number will be operational this evening until 9:00 p.m., Pacific Daylight Time (PDT); on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., PDT; on Sunday from noon to 6:00 p.m., PDT; and thereafter from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., PDT. Interested parties also can visit the FDIC's Web site at http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/failed/shoreline.html.

The FDIC estimates that the cost to the Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) will be $41.4 million. Compared to other alternatives, GBC International Bank's acquisition was the least costly resolution for the FDIC's DIF. Shoreline Bank is the 129th FDIC-insured institution to fail in the nation this year, and the tenth in Washington. The last FDIC-insured institution closed in the state was North County Bank, Arlington, on September 24, 2010.

Suicide

I just read about another suicide.

ANOTHER SUICIDE!!

I have no idea if it was due to being bullied, or just about the difficulty of being gay in our world. In any case -- isn't it enough?

Isn't there ANY humanity left, any compassion left, in the hearts of today's children?

I was bullied for many years, a long time ago. My life in primary school was a living hell. Many is the time I thought of killing myself. Many is the time I had fantasies of killing my tormentors.

I remember very distinctly hearing about Columbine, hearing that those boys had been bullied, ridiculed, made fun of (now we do not know exactly how true that was -- but, I suspect it was truer than the story that came out later). My very first reaction was --- GOOD!!! It's about time someone got back at those people -- those kids who make life miserable for so many of their classmates. The kids who make you want to hide. The kids who make you not want to answer questions -- because you'd do ANYTHING to remain anonymous.

Those kids whose actions forever changed the arc of your life.

Dumb, stupid, evil, super-entitled devil children who changed forever how you react to people, how you trust, or do not trust people, how you ALWAYS worry about everything.

I've spent years moving past THAT past, years attempting to undo the crushing effects of being the class punching bag, the one everyone else took out their failures, disappointments, anger on.

I almost understand why some of these kids did it. Why they killed themselves. All they had to look forward to was more of the same -- two years, four years, however long. An eternity to a 12, 13, 15, 17, year old.

Do any of the evil bigots who celebrate these senseless deaths have any idea how much this old woman despises them? How much they are hated (yes, HATED!)?

Isn't it enough yet? Haven't you destroyed enough lives? Will you do the same to your son or daughter if they are gay or lesbian? Will you let them live --- but fill them with guilt because your "God" hates them ("now honey God loves you -- but hates who you've become -- what you do. WHO PUT THESE IDEAS IN YOUR FOOL HEAD? You 'straighten up' -- RIGHT NOW!!").

When will these people become CHRISTIANS, and learn to love?

Homophobic bullying takes another child’s life
Posted by Devona Walker on @ 3:37 pm

The body count of children and young adults committing suicide over homosexuality is shockingly high
Tyler Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge

It’s been more than a decade since Matthew Shepard was beaten to death in Laramie, Wyo. Yet, the homophobia that took his life continues to claim the lives of others. But the victims are getting younger. This month alone three boys, ages 13, 13 and 15, took their own lives because they were bullied at school by kids who “thought they were gay.”

One kid, Seth Walsh, 13. who lived in Tehachapi, outside of Bakersfield, Ca., hanged himself from a tree in his back yard after years of being bullied. He died Tuesday afternoon after nine days on life support. Another boy, Asher Brown of Houston, Tx., 13, shot himself in the head last Thursday, also directly due to the incessant bullying he suffered at school.
READ MORE:

His parents told the Houston Chronicle the bullying came specifically from four students. They say they complained several times during the last 18 months but the school did nothing about it. The school did not even bother returning his parents’ phone calls.

He was “bullied to death,” said Amy and David Truong, Asher’s mother and stepfather. “Picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes. Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class.”

Then, yet another boy, Billy Lucas, 15, of Greensburg, In. took his life in early Sept. Once again, he killed himself after incessant bullying. Why did they bully him? They thought he was gay.

“He was threatened to get beat up every day,” friend and classmate Nick Hughes told the local television station. “Sometimes in classes, kids would act like they were going to punch him and stuff and push him.”

“Some people at school called him names,” Hughes said. Those names questioned Lucas’ sexual orientation. Lucas, for the most part, and that Lucas, did little to defend himself.

“He would try to but people would just try to break him down with words and stuff and just pick on him,” Hughes added.

Another boy, 11, was beaten up, his arm broken by bullies because he joined the cheerleading team at his school. That kid Tyler Wilson of Ohio refuses to quit the squad due to the bullying. His mother, once again, complained to the school about the bullying but received no assistance.

Then, in New Jersey, a Rutgers University student jumped off the George Washington bridge on Sept. 23, after two students secretly videotaped him having sex with another male student in his dorm room then posted it on the Internet.

Dharun Ravi and Molly W. Wei, both 18-years-old, were each charged with two counts of invasion of privacy Tuesday for allegedly placing the camera in the boy’s room.

Then, in Michigan an Asst Attorney General has gone on a six month campaign of harassment against a University of Michigan student. This youth’s name is Chris Armstrong. He is the first openly gay student assembly president at the University. The city official launched a website entitled “Chris Armstrong Watch.” This public official’s name is Andrew Shirvell. He has allegedly stalked the poor kid outside of his house. He posted doctored photos on the website with rainbow flags and swastikas printed on the sleeve of the kid’s shirt. He calls Armstrong Satan’s representative on the Student Council. He calls Armstrong a radical homosexual activist. Shirvell has published blog posts accusing Armstrong of engaging in “flagrant sexual promiscuity,” sexually seducing and influencing “a previously conservative [male] student,” and trying to recruit incoming first year students “to join the homosexual ‘lifestyle.’ ” Believe or not, Shirvell still has his job.

“I’m a Christian citizen exercising my First Amendment rights,” Shirvell told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “I have no problem with the fact that Chris is a homosexual. I have a problem with the fact that he’s advancing a radical homosexual agenda.”

Car Joseph Walker-Hoover\’s mother speaks out about bullying

The above video relates to a case dating back to April 2009. In this case, the 11-year-old pushed into taking his own life because he was bullied because his classmates thought “he was gay,” “too effeminate” etc. was black. The only reason I bring it up is to show that bigotry and cruelty is truly colorblind.

Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover hung himself with an extension cord after yet another day of bullying at the New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, Ma. where he was a student. He was only in the sixth grade.
“I just want to help some other child. I know there are other kids being picked on, and it’s day in and day out,” said Sirdeaner L. Walker, his mother.

During the same month, 11-year-old Jaheem Herrera woke up one morning and told his mother he didn’t want to go to school in DeKalb County, Ga. He came home happy that day showing his mother a report card full of As and Bs. Then, he went upstairs to his room. But when his sister called him down to dinner, he didn’t answer. His mother and daughter climbed the stairs to Jaheem’s room and found him hanging by his belt in the closet.

“I always used to see these things on TV, dead people on the news,” said Masika Bermudez, Jaheem’s mother. “I saw somebody die and to see this dead person is your son, hanging there, a young boy.

… To hang yourself like that, you’ve got to really be tired of something.”

Bermudez says bullies at school pushed Jaheem over the edge. He complained about being called gay, ugly and “the virgin” because he was from the Virgin Islands, she said.

“He used to say Mom they keep telling me this … this gay word, this gay, gay, gay. I’m tired of hearing it, they’re telling me the same thing over and over,” she said.

Two years prior, 17-year-old Eric Mohat shot himself in his bedroom after enduring similar taunting and bullying.
“He was called fag,” his mother Jan Mohat said. “He was called gay.”
Then one day after his math class, she recalls the final taunts that pushed him over the edge.
“Eric was told by the bully,” his mothers says. “ ‘Eric, why don’t you go home and shoot yourself. It’s not like anybody would care.’

There is one common thread in the above cases: The system failed them all. Whether it was school officials, other parents, or in the case of the city official, institutionalized homophobia, there was a failure on the behalf of people entrusted with looking out for the common good. In all of the above cases, except for two, that failure directly resulted in loss of life. Tragic.

Yet still, some school officials refuse to take bullying seriously. As a reporter in Oklahoma, I personally recall right-wing attacks against a seminar on bullying. Just educating the teachers about anti-gay bullying sent Christian Conservatives over the edge. They raged on that what some teacher might assume was bullying infringed upon other students rights to express their values. They actually campaigned against an anti-bullying initiative. They claimed that protecting gay students or students perceived of as being gay was a form of recruitment by the extremist homosexual activists.

When it is finally ours, this freedom, this liberty,

this beautiful and terrible thing, needful to man as air,

usable as earth; when it belongs at last to all,
when it is truly instinct, brain matter, diastole, systole,
reflex action; when it is finally won; when it is more
than the gaudy mumbo jumbo of politicians:
this man, this Douglass, this former slave, this Negro
beaten to his knees, exiled, visioning a world
where none is lonely, none hunted, alien,
this man, superb in love and logic, this man
shall be remembered. Oh, not with statues’ rhetoric,
not with legends and poems and wreaths of bronze alone,
but with the lives grown out of his life, the lives
fleshing his dream of the beautiful, needful thing.

That’s by the great Frederick Douglass.

This is from the great Emma Lazarus:

Until we are all free, we are none of us free.

Water crisis mounting (South Africa)

Water crisis mounting
Sep 28, 2010 5:43 PM | By Sapa
By 2015, 80 percent of South Africa's fresh water resources will be so badly polluted that no process of purification available in the country will be able to make it fit for consumption.

"If we do not find a completely new source of water altogether in about two years, most of Gauteng will be without safe health drinking water."

The Environment and Conservation Association said in a statement on Tuesday that it was estimated that in five years, almost 80 percent of the country's fresh water resources would be so badly polluted that no process of purification available in the country would be able to clean it sufficiently to make it fit for human or animal consumption.

"If we do not find a completely new source of water altogether in about two years, most of Gauteng will be without safe health drinking water."

The impending disaster that would be created by acid mine drainage as well as sewerage and industrial pollution had on many occasions been brought to the attention of the government, however with no positive results, the association said.

The association would embark on a massive water monitoring project where it would roll out water testing and monitoring in the six major water catchments in Gauteng and Limpopo, to produce independent and accurate results of exactly how bad the country's water was.

Those results would be released to the public and the media, both locally and internationally.

"We will need approximately R 1 million for this project. It is time that big business, especially those that rely on water for the production of their products like Coca Cola, SAB Miller, Windhoek Beer, all soft drink manufacturers and food producers, get involved and make a substantial contribution towards organisations like ours so we can save South Africa's water."

Water preservation and conservation was not just an environmental issue, but an economic issue.

"Almost 56 percent of the products we consume rely directly on the supply of clean healthy water, and if this water is not available, those products cannot be produced.

"Water affects every single part of our daily lives and without it we cannot survive. We cannot eat and we will be left in a country made barren by pollution."
