"Construction Worker Killed in Building Collapse in Manhattan" - that's the headline of a story in today's New York Times.
Today it warrants a story in a major Newspaper. That was not the case in the era before Unions. Various construction workers, iron workers, etc., etc., etc., were killed on a regular basis when buildings, dams, bridges, tunnels, were built.
Part of the clamor for Unions was about safety -- and getting paid for RISKING YOUR LIFE. In every one of the building trades, construction of any kind, logging, etc., "workplace injury" and death were common.
Then came Unions, workplace safety laws, some measure of workers rights, OHSA, and things improved. Safety improved. Pay improved.
Now, our Plutocratic Republicans want to gut all that stuff, all those expenses. After all, our "enlightened" business owners ............... well, our "enlightened" business owners DON'T GIVE A DAMN. With a total of about 19% under and unemployment -- if you die, they think they can easily replace you.
Oh yeah -- I almost forgot -- they also want to end protections for women. End abortion, cut back on women's health care (while retaining coverage for "hardon pills" - because we ALL know how important THAT is) -- because (as the old joke goes), "if she dies, she dies".
Remember, back in those "good old days" our Republican "friends" and their minions are trying to return us to, most marriages WERE "for life", and most men that survived had more than one wife -- "if she dies, she dies". Death in childbirth was quite common. Early death caused by birthing too many farmhands was also common -- "she just plumb wore out".
That's the wonderful world the Republicans, and their Rabid-Religious-Right-Wing-KKKonservative-Policies, want to restore.
The added benefit -- though they will not say it -- cut the population of poor people (except for the ones THEY need) with the reddest, rawist, meanest, "society" ever seen.
