As our finances have deteriorated, I've discovered another thing about Texas -- they give hardly any grace periods when it comes to paying bills. If your electric bill is due the 2nd of the month, and it's not payed by the 6th -- they generate a disconnect notice -- for FIFTEEN days after the bill is due (the 17th) - then they turn off your power. PERIOD!!
No 30 days, not even 20 days. Three days, generate the notice, then turn you off 15 days later.
Don't forget. Don't get called away on an emergency. Don't do nothing -- just pay, even if you can't eat.
For senior citizens, they send out requests for assistance to your neighbors. So, if a senior, and caught between a rock and a hard place, they also require you to BEG YOUR NEIGHBORS for help.
Gosh, how many cookies will grandma have to bake to make up for that?
I really like Texas -- but the culture of "radical individualism" (unless you belong to the "right" church) is a bit much.
Like so many places today -- it's fine if you are well to do, not so fine if on the edge or poor.
