Heartland

Ever notice how they started calling it "The Heartland" not long after its industrial might was gutted, not long after they moved all the jobs out of the country, or out of town?  It's as if getting a title was the consolation prize.  After they left a bunch of polluted industrial sites, no longer fit for man or beast - "The Heartland".  Now there's an "opioid crisis" in the former Midwest ( IE: "The Heartland")  --  broken bodies, broken minds, people thrown away with no place to go.

Rather than deal with the fallout of greed, of jobs being moved for 1% more profit, we discard the workers, the people, then start another "War On Drugs" so those no longer warring against pot can still have jobs.

All this will make the "crisis" WORSE simply because those who actually NEED painkillers to function will get them wherever they can  --  legal or not.  A nation of 60, 70, 80 year old junkies.

Then what's left of our once strong middle class can go tsk, tsk, and continue along their merry way blaming those "weak people", those "losers", for being human, for being broken, for trying to keep body and soul together any way they can.  It must be really tough to live in a place where your father and grandfather managed to make a good living  --  and you can't even feed your family decently.

By the way   ----   so far Trump is not the answer.  Perhaps some REAL Democrats might be.

Trash Calls

Just received another phone call from someone "offering" to help with back pain, diabetes supplies, internet and phone service, etc., etc.  This was not another scam call (another issue altogether), but one sponsored by one or another legitimate company.  These calls are often intrusive, off base, and just a big pain in the ass.  Always from a person speaking heavily accented, near unintelligible English.

These calls are often poorly scripted, and RUDE.  It almost seems as if they are designed to foster hatred of foreigners.  Coming from some South Asian country, these calls often feature a contempt for Americans.  People with little command of my language acting as if I'm a total moron (also a feature of many scam calls).

The folks on the phone seem unaware of American mores, customs, and conventions, asking questions that no person in their right mind would answer.

Though it may sound strange, right after another one of these calls, I said, "I feel like voting for Trump"  --  then laughed.  The irritation I felt after another call that caused me to stop what I was doing, try to decipher what was being said, try to politely disengage, being bombarded by rude questions and/or statements questioning my intelligence, leads me to hang up, and wonder who hires these people who act like we are dopes and dupes.  Next reaction: "damn foreigners, know nothing about us  --  keep 'em out".

Totally irrational, but a response to the near constant bombardment of trash calls  --  this without even the "We are from Microtech", or "I'm calling to you from investigations department of IRS  --  I am Mike Smith of investigations departments"  --  all with a HEAVY accent  --  not typical of "Mike Smith".

Is it all a plot?  Do anti-immigrant, anti-foreigner folks plan this stuff?  Is it timed to cause major disruption in your day?  Probably not   ----   but   ----   How many folks want to build a wall, close all borders, end immigration, in a hope it will end these insane phone calls?

The issue with teen age girls speaking at a rate that makes every other word unintelligible is another issue altogether.
