Here's some Albert Ayler -- this was recorded at Slugs Saloon in 1966. I started going to Slugs BEFORE it became a Jazz Club. It was just a dingy, lower east side dive. There was a bench by the entrance (inside) where some of the local junkies would nod out.
Then some of the local musicians started "woodsheding" there. The Turrentine brothers, Kenny Dorham, and others -- buy cheap beer and hear some wonderful music.
Even after it became "hot" I could just waltz in -- no cover, no minimum, etc. I was one of the regulars, one of the old-timers. Great music.
Ayler took Jazz in totally new directions -- just suspend all expectations, just let the music "wash over" you. Of course, a little herb or peyote helped - back in the day.
