American football -- increased violence. Bigger, faster, players many of whom are looking for the gold at the end of their rainbow - a pro contract. "Superstar coaches" -- be they college or pro, with multi-million dollar contracts, all going after the same "superstar" HIGH SCHOOL players so they can justify their contracts and lead "their" team to the promised land - a national championship, or a bowl game.
The "lucky" and talented college players go on to pro careers - which often lead to traumatic brain injuries, chronic, incurable joint and skeletal injuries -- some being crippled before 45.
Many seem to develop addictions to prescription pain killers. Lately some commit suicide, making sure their brains are untouched - so they are available for study.
In this unhappy mess, coach Joe Paterno was always held up as a beacon of light -- he was a guy who won "the right way". He "cared" about his players. He graduated a large percentage of his players. Some formed lifelong relationships with him.
All gone down the toilet -- because he seems to have cared more for his friend the pedophile, HIS program, HIS "legacy", HIS University, than he - or any other person of power - cared about the children RAPED, MOLESTED, SEXUALLY ABUSED, by his good friend, and fellow coach J. Sandusky - a now convicted molester of children.
It's not that he "didn't do enough" -- he didn't do a damn thing for the kids. A "good Catholic" - Paterno followed the trail blazed by his church.
The other "leaders" of the University are equally guilty.
I think the NCAA should apply "the death penalty" to AT VERY LEAST the football program.
Let the kids there transfer. Heck, pay them their expenses. Allow them to get away from that once proud University and football program. At least that will teach some of them there are consequences for CRIMINAL ACTIONS -- even for "well barbered" old white men.
